## Local details.
Better decisions.

Every hiring plan starts with the role and its location. Here’s what to discuss before employing someone in Portugal.

01

### Employment agreement and pay structure

Ask how this will be handled for your proposed role and who is responsible. Include the agreed scope in your hiring proposal.

02

### Leave, benefits and payroll schedule

Ask how this will be handled for your proposed role and who is responsible. Include the agreed scope in your hiring proposal.

03

### Onboarding documents and employee support

Ask how this will be handled for your proposed role and who is responsible. Include the agreed scope in your hiring proposal.

Planning your hire

## What to budget and confirm in Portugal

A Portuguese hiring budget should show regular salary, holiday allowance and Christmas allowance separately. This makes the annual commitment clear and prevents a 12-month salary estimate from missing additional pay. Work location and the employee’s start date also matter when agreeing payroll and leave.

[Hiring checks](#hiring-checks)[Salary example](#salary-example)[Employment options](#employment-options)[Onboarding](#onboarding-checklist)[Questions](#hiring-faq)

### Agree the full-year pay structure

Ask whether the quoted annual package includes holiday and Christmas allowances. Have the proposed employer show payment timing and accruals separately. Include any meal allowance, bonus and insurance in the offer rather than leaving benefits to an informal follow-up.

### Scope the actual workplace

Specify where the employee will work, who provides equipment and how expenses are approved. Ask which collective terms apply and have the provider explain the proposed employing arrangement. Confirm who will handle payroll questions and changes to the work pattern.

### Prepare for a mid-year start or exit

Request a first-year payroll calendar rather than assuming a full year of payments and leave. Ask how allowances and unused entitlements are reconciled if the employee leaves. Keep commercial service fees separate from the employee’s final settlement.

### A worked salary-budget example

Illustration: a full year with €3,000 monthly base, one base-salary holiday allowance and one base-salary Christmas allowance. No variable or additional remuneration is assumed.

Illustrative gross salary calculation · EURRegular salary · €3,000 × 12 | €36,000 |

Illustrative holiday allowance | €3,000 |

Illustrative Christmas allowance | €3,000 |

Annual salary and allowances | €42,000 |

Average monthly accrual · €42,000 ÷ 12 | €3,500 |

This is a salary subtotal. Employer social contributions, insurance, agreed benefits and the service fee must be added. The allowance bases can include more than base salary; admission, departure and other circumstances can affect entitlement. Ask for a calculation for the actual employee and start date. Accrual is not the same as payment timing.

### Compare the employment options before choosing a service

Ask for a proposal that explains the arrangement as well as the price. Your team size, planned duration and local activities should guide the decision.

A provider employment arrangementConfirm which entity employs the person, whether the proposed structure is appropriate locally, and the responsibilities covered by the service agreement. Request the full employment budget alongside the management fee.

Employment through your own organisationCompare the registration, payroll, HR and ongoing administration required for your planned operations. Ask an adviser whether your existing organisation can employ locally or whether a local entity is needed.

An independent contractorAssess the actual relationship before choosing this route. Ask for a classification review if the person will work under your direction in an ongoing role; a contractor label alone does not resolve that question.

### Prepare these details for the hiring proposal

- Job duties, work location, weekly schedule and intended start date.
- Base pay and a written breakdown of holiday allowance, Christmas allowance and benefits.
- Identity and work-authorisation checks, plus the provider’s tax and social-security registration checklist.
- Employment contract, any applicable collective terms and remote-work details.
- First-year leave calculation, payroll calendar and responsibility for employee support.

Start with role and company details in your inquiry. The selected provider can request sensitive employee documents through its secure onboarding process.

### Questions about hiring in Portugal

**Why does a €3,000 monthly base become €42,000 in the example?**

The example adds two €3,000 allowances to 12 regular payments. It assumes a full year and base salary only. Ask whether a quoted annual figure already includes these allowances before adding them to your budget. Actual allowance bases and entitlement need an employee-specific calculation.

[Diário da República · Labour Code, Articles 263–264](https://diariodarepublica.pt/dr/legislacao-consolidada/lei/2009-34546475)

**Is annual leave always 22 working days in the first year?**

Portugal’s general minimum is 22 working days, but the admission year has special rules: two working days per month of the contract, up to 20, with conditions on when they may be taken. Ask the employer to calculate the first-year entitlement from the actual start date.

[Portuguese government · Working in Portugal](https://www.gov.pt/guias/trabalhar-em-portugal)

**Is the Christmas allowance always a full month?**

Article 263 provides for a month’s remuneration, with proportional amounts in the admission year, departure year and certain suspension circumstances. A mid-year hire should therefore have a specific allowance calculation rather than a full-year assumption.
